10 Helpful Tips for a Smooth Toronto Move
Moving in Toronto? Whether you’re moving across the street or across the province, there are several steps you can take to ensure a smooth relocation. Planning and organization are keys to a successful move. Most people end up having such a hard time during their moves because they pack and plan at the last minute. Give yourself a head start by reading the following 10 tips to ensure a hassle-free transition.
- Disassemble any furniture or household items that require the use of tools for disassembly. Toronto movers may charge you extra if they have to spend time disassembling items
- Prior to moving day, inform the Toronto moving company of any special circumstances that may potentially complicate the move. For example, if there is no elevator in your new apartment building, make sure to let them know beforehand because that could affect the price of your move
- If you’re doing your own packing, start packing weeks in advance. Begin with non-essential items and pack up the most important items just days before the move.
- Gather all of the packing supplies you’ll need. As a rule of thumb, you should get more packing supplies than you think you’ll need because of our tendency to underestimate. Better yet, have your Toronto mover check out your belongings and determine exactly how many boxes and how much packing material you’ll need. They have a lot more experience evaluating moves and will probably be able to come up with a more accurate estimate.
- Weeks before your move, make a list of all of the items you’re not taking with you, and determine where they will go so you can arrange for them to be discarded, recycled, given away, or donated to charity.
- Pack everything on a room-by-room basis so all of the items that belong in each room stay together, making unpacking at your new home or apartment easier. You can color code the boxes so you know to which room they belong.
- Book your moving date at least 60 to 90 days in advance to ensure that you can move on the preferred day and with the Montreal moving company of your choice. It’s especially important to book your move well in advance during the summer months because that is the busiest time of year for movers.
- Keep all of your valuables and important documents with you. Don’t let the mover pack them away because they can get lost or stolen. Some important documents you’ll want to have on hand include birth certificates, bank records, current bills, and your Toronto moving company contract.
- Dispose of any flammable items. Do not pack them because they can pose a threat in the back of a hot moving truck.
- If you have plants, prune them a couple of weeks before you move so they are easier to transport. When packing your plants, put them in cardboard containers filled with packing material to hold them in place. You can put wet paper on top of the plants and punch holes at the top of the containers to keep the plants moist and allow them to breathe.
